1968 terremoto del Belice

Il terremoto del Belice del 1968 iniziò nel pomeriggio del 14 gennaio 1968. Le scosse più violente e distruttive si verificarono nella notte tra il 14 e il 15 gennaio. L’epicentro del terremoto fu localizzato nella Valle del Belice, un'area compresa tra le province di Trapani, Agrigento e Palermo. Molti comuni furono completamente o quasi completamente distrutti. I più colpiti includono: Gibellina, Salaparuta, Montevago, Poggioreale, Santa Margherita di Belice. Per la prima volta tornai in Sicilia per lavoro, da fotografo. Viaggiai in treno con i volontari che andavano a dare aiuto alla popolazione. Mi fermai solo un paio di giorni a Montevago.

The Belice earthquake of 1968 began in the afternoon of 14 January 1968. The most violent and destructive tremors occurred during the night between 14 and 15 January. The epicentre of the earthquake was located in the Belice Valley, an area between the provinces of Trapani, Agrigento and Palermo. Many towns were completely or almost completely destroyed. The most affected included Gibellina, Salaparuta, Montevago, Poggioreale and Santa Margherita di Belice. I returned to Sicily for the first time for work, as a photographer. I travelled by train with volunteers who were going to help the population. I only stayed a couple of days in Montevago.
