Nel 2006, durante uno dei numerosi viaggi in Colombia da fotografo, ho intuito che era ormai inevitabile che il mio sguardo su questo Paese, esercitato già molte volte, uscisse dagli schemi del servizio editoriale e si approfondisse addentrandosi nel mondo del grande scrittore i cui romanzi mi avevano tanto appassionato e che mi aveva sempre accompagnato nei viaggi precedenti. Era arrivato il momento di raccontare per immagini il mio Caribe colombiano, di elaborare tutti gli appunti, gli stimoli, le riflessioni che la lettura dell’opera di Gabriel García Márquez aveva suscitato in me. Sapevo bene ciò che volevo tentare: ritrarre quel microcosmo umile e minuto che mi circondava e nel quale tuttavia riconoscevo senza ombra di dubbio la grandiosa allegoria della storia universale che mi aveva affascinato in Cent’anni di solitudine.

In 2006, during one of my many trips to Colombia as a photographer, I realized that it was inevitable that my gaze on this country, already exercised many times, would go beyond the schemes of editorial service and deepen by delving into the world of the great writer whose novels had so enthralled me and who had always accompanied me on previous trips. The time had come to tell the story of my Colombian Caribbean through images, to elaborate all the notes, stimuli, and reflections that reading the work of Gabriel García Márquez had aroused in me. I knew well what I wanted to try: to portray that humble and minute microcosm that surrounded me and in which I nevertheless recognized without a shadow of a doubt the grandiose allegory of universal history that had fascinated me in One Hundred Years of Solitude.
